Youth Program
2007-08 Season
FORMAT
To encourage the broadest participation possible, the
SSO Youth Program now offers both a string orchestra
and chamber ensembles.  The String Orchestra gives
emerging string students an ensemble experience with a
variety of musical styles including standard string
orchestra repertoire.  The Chamber Ensemble Program
organizes students into small groups, based on their
ability level, age, and schedules.  The Youth Program is
a collaboration between the Steamboat Springs School
District and the Steamboat Springs Orchestra, and is
funded in part by a grant from the Steamboat Springs
Education Fund.
ELIGIBILITY
The String Orchestra is open primarily to string students
at the equivalent level of Suzuki books 2 through 4.
Students still in Suzuki book one may participate in the
orchestra with the recommendation of their teacher.

The Chamber Ensemble Program invites students to
participate on the following instruments:
Violin            Flute          French horn          Piano
Viola            Oboe         Trumpet
Cello            Clarinet      Trombone
String Bass   Bassoon     Tuba

Students in the String Orchestra may elect to also
participate in a chamber ensemble.  Note:  Students that
have not yet progressed beyond Suzuki book 4 must
participate in orchestra in order to be eligible to be in a
chamber ensemble.
REHEARSALS
The String Orchestra will rehearse on Monday
afternoons from 4:15 – 5:45, beginning on September
17 at the Steamboat Springs High School.  Ensemble
rehearsal time and location will be determined by the
availability of coaches and students.
CONDUCTORS/COACHES
The String Orchestra will be led by the team of Music
Director John Fairlie and assistant conductor Bonnie
Murray.
Mr. Fairlie was founder and Music Director
of the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra, and
currently serves that same role with the Boulder Youth
Symphony.  A former student of renowned conductor
and violinist Anshel Brusilov, he is also a professional
bassoonist.  As an active and widely-respected music
educator, Mr. Fairlie has worked extensively with young
students, both individually through private teaching and
in groups ranging from grade school bands to high
school honor bands and orchestras in the states of
Texas, Louisiana and Colorado, and has taught at the
University of Texas, Permian Basin, the University of
New Orleans, and the New Orleans Center for Creative
Arts.

Ms. Murray is an accomplished violinist, having played
professionally in the Omaha Symphony, the Denver
Chamber Orchestra, the Boulder Philharmonic
Orchestra, the Cameo String Quartet, the Steamboat
Springs String Quartet, and the Old School Celtic band.
As a public school orchestra teacher, Ms. Murray has
taught hundreds of students in elementary, middle and
high school as well as private students since 1979.

Chamber Ensemble coaches are professional
members of the Steamboat Springs Orchestra, and have
been selected for their technical mastery and their ability
to work with young musicians.
